  • 1. A rugby league game is played with two teams of thirteen players on the field at one time.

  • 2. In Australia there are 16 NRL teams in the competition, across three states.

  • 3. Each year an interstate series is played between Queensland and NSW called the State of Origin. It is played over three matches with intense rivalry.

  • 4. The main object of the game is to score a try by grounding the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. This is worth four points.

  • 5. Following a try, the scoring team then has an opportunity to ‘convert’ with a kick for goal. Where this kick is taken from is relative to where the try was scored across the try line.

  • 6. A player may tackle an opponent who has possession of the ball so as to prevent them from running with the ball.

  • 7. When tackling, a player can not pick up and tackle an opponent head first. This is known as a spear tackle and is not allowed.
