Gilmore making it look so easy

Jannah Kelly hits the Quiksilver Pro. Our very lucky major prize winner from the Hottest Bodies Competition, Jannah Kelly, enjoyed a trip to the prestigious Quiksilver and Roxy Pro. Over the next week SKTR will be featuring blogs from her trip. They’re jam-packed with all the behind-the-scenes goss, as well as tips and tricks she learned first-hand from Australian golden, Steph Gilmore, during a one-on-one surf lesson. Watch this space.

The Arrival......

I was keeping my eye on the ROXY PRO quarter finals on Friday at work as I watched the clock tick over another minute. My flight was at 6.40pm and couldn’t wait to get to the Gold Coast. As the waves and condition were solid, I was well aware that I might not make it in time to see the Semis and Final if they went ahead on Friday. The thought of this was devastating so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.

Luckily for me, though I’m sure frustrating for all the chicks (including Australia’s Surfing hero Steph Gilmore) waiting to surf, the waves were pumping on the Wednesday which meant the girls competition was put on hold to allow the men’s comp to proceed.

So, after a very chilled-out and relaxing night in a sub-penthouse in the amazing Kirra Beach apartments, Lizzie (my friend from home) and I headed down very early to watch the ROXY PRO’s Semis and Final tournament unfold at Snapper Rocks. The field had now whittled down to the final four competitors, with Australians and Hawaiians battling it out for supremacy.

The first semi-final was Hawaiian 19-year-old Coco Ho competing against golden girl of the surf 22-year-old, 3-time-world-champ Stephanie Gilmore.

I could see Steph, she was wearing hot pink, looking very cool, calm and focused. As I scanned the crowd I observed that it was packed with young surfer girls, eagerly watching and waiting, to see the superstar enter the surf. Steph surfed with poise and grace, a real beauty to watch. I don’t doubt she will be the next Layne Beachley.

Also with my hot-bod radar on I looked through the crowd hoping to see Kelly Slater?!?!

No such luck as yet, but my eyes were definitely staying peeled hoping to see some delicious abs!

Will tell more next blog.

FAST FACT:
Did you know that surf wear specifically for women wasn’t even in stores till the ‘90s. US surfer Lisa Andersen suggested to her sponsor, Quiksilver, that it turn out clothing girls could actually surf in. The billion-dollar-industry now out-sells menswear.
