Well Girls the second code in preparation for footy fever is AFL aka Aussie Rules. Facts and figures have been carefully crafted to help get you started in the countdown to the first match on Thursday March 25.
How times have changed. In 1977 only two teams called the MCG their home ground, Melbourne and Richmond
Paul Roos made history for coaching the most Sydney Swans matches. From 2002 – 2010 he led an astounding 178 games.
The magic number 3 signifies the most Brownlow Medals won by an individual. This was achieved by Haydn Bunton (Fitz: 1931-32, 1935); Dick Reynolds (Ess: 1934, 1937-38); Bob Skilton (South Melb: 1959, 1963, 1968); Ian Stewart (STK: 1965-66 Rich: 1971).
In 1996 and 1997 the Brownlow Medal was overshadowed by controversy when it was speculated that players that Would've won the Brownlow had not been suspended:
Corey McKernan (’96) and Chris Grant (’97) would have collected to award had they not been suspended.
Collingwood played Brisbane Lions in their last ever home game at Victoria Oval before it was closed down in 1999.
Before rebranding as AFL in 1990, the league was referred to as VFL, standing for Victorian Football League.
The first team to play at Canberra’s new Manuka Oval, were the Kangaroos who christened the field in 1998.
The highest AFL score recorded was in 1992 when Geelong defeated Brisbane Bears 239 points to 75 at Carrara in Queensland during Round 7.
The lowest AFL score recorded was in Round 17 in 1899 at Corio Oval when St. Kilda was defeated by Geelong, 1 point to 162 points.
The highest winning margin is a whopping 190 points. In 1979 Fitzroy devasted Melbourne 238 to during Round 17 at Waverley Park.
The most successful comeback of all time was in Round 16 of 2001 at the MCG. Essendon were 69 points down at the 10 minute mark in the 2nd quarter to rivals North Melbourne. The final score? Essendon 27.9 (171) def North Melbourne 25.9 (159).
