The Six Secrets to a Good Night's Sleep
When you’ve had a busy and stressful day, nothing is more appealing than a blissful night’s sleep. But for many, it’s easier than it sounds. Even when you’re tired, a racing mind, worry and stress can lead to hours of tossing and turning and the anxiety that comes with not being able to get to sleep. In the end, it becomes a vicious cycle and sleeplessness becomes a nightly routine.
WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT
The benefits of a good night’s sleep run deeper than your energy levels. Sleep is an important phase of the day for the body and the mind to rest, rejuvenate and rebuild your immune system and hormone levels.
Not getting adequate sleep can have a variety of impacts on your health – it can throw your hormone balance out, affecting your ability to concentrate, cope with stress and maintain a positive outlook. Studies have also shown that a lack of sleep can make you crave salty and fatty food, which can cause you to gain weight.
There are several simple strategies you can implement to ensure you have the best possible chance of a restful and soothing night’s sleep.
TRY NOT TO EAT DINNER TOO LATE.
If your body is still trying to digest food too close to bedtime it can make it difficult to settle into a restful zone.
EXERCISE IN THE MORNING.
Exercise is a great way to tire the body and prepare it for rest but if you exercise at night, it can stimulate your heart-rate and release energy-boosting endorphins that will take time and energy to calm your body and mind down.
CHOOSE WIND-DOWN FOODS.
Avoid caffeine, chocolate or other stimulants before bed. Try herbal substitutes such as chamomile or valerian tea.
GET INTO A ROUTINE.
By creating a set 20 or 30 minute routine before bed it tells your brain and your body that it’s sleep time. Find what works for you but avoid TV half an hour before bed.
CREATE A SLEEPY ENVIRONMENT.
Dim the lighting and create a relaxing environment with relaxation music. Spray a light mist of lavender on your pillow to help with winding down.
